What I enjoy most about landing in Ajaccio are the welcoming views of the mountains in the background, and the endless succession of bays and small coves with foamy waves breaking over the rocky shoreline.

These are the beaches along Iles Sanguinaires just minutes before landing at Campo dell’Oro Airport.

City Highlights

Ajaccio is a lively and busy town. The buses in Ajaccio provide transportation to the nearby seaside resort of Porticcio and the beaches along Iles Sanguinaires. There’s also a small train that shows visitors some of the town’s highlights including the Tour de la Parata, a must visit.

This is the Place Foch, the heart of the city. Ajaccio offers something for everyone: Shopping, relaxing cafés, restaurants, bakeries, epiceries, ice cream shops, museums, monuments and beaches. 

The Ajaccio fresh market opens daily and is a popular gathering place for the locals and a pleasure to visit. Whether shopping for food or souvenirs, the stores in Ajaccio offer some of the best deals on the island.

This is one of the beaches along Iles Sanguinaires in the outskirts of Ajaccio.

The citadel of Ajaccio reminds me of a miniature version of el Morro castle in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It’s fun to sit here and watch the huge ferries and airplanes go by.

Just a few steps from this beach is the Cathedral where Napoleon was baptized.

Letizia Bonaparte, Napoleon’s mother, went into labor in this church and had to be carried to her home. Today the Bonaparte home is a museum.
