Flashpacking in Corsica

Recently I learned about a new travel trend which resembles the type of travel I do and try to promote on this site: Flashpacking. I prefer to describe myself as an “Easy Hiker” (a label I made up) but maybe I am a Flashpacker.

A flashpacker travels like a backpacker but has some disposable income and carries electronic gear such as, a camera, IPod, laptop or GPS.

Flashpacking is “backpacking with a bigger budget”. My sister, who only vacations in 4 and 5 stars resorts, calls it locura (Spanish word for madness) and “spending Euros while being uncomfortable”.

I love nature and sleeping outdoors and I don’t like crowds but I also enjoy a nice hot shower and the freedom of exploring Corsica in a rental car (not a bus).

In my trips to Corsica, I have stayed at the ClubMed resort in Cargese, several 2 and 3 star hotels, a furnished apartment and some campsites near the beach. I’ve enjoyed all of these experiences, but what I prefer most is a guided hiking tour with a tour company like Tour Aventure. (See my free eBook for more details or check out some of the photos from this trip).

The food in Corsica (and most of southern Europe) is delicious and of high quality. Even Danon yogurt has a different taste and texture in France. I enjoy going to a fresh market or grocery every day and stocking up on chesses, charcuterie or seafood, warm bread, garden grown fresh fruits and vegetables. This is how I’m able to save money and eat well while I travel, although I eat at cafés and restaurants sometimes as well.

There are about 240 campsites in Corsica and the weather on the island is ideal for sleeping outdoors for about 7 months of the year. Flashpacking provides a fun, alternative way to visit Europe on a budget. Once you try it you may not want to travel any other way.

  1. I have two words for you: “IberoStar Bavaro” :)

  2. I’m sure it’s nice, but can you leave the resort and explore DR without an escort or group of people? I think not! :)

  3. “I just found your site and just have to say I have so enjoyed it. I would like to write about New Zealand, my home town, but I was getting stuck on how to go about it and haven’t done much with it. You have now given me some wonderful ideas and just wanted to say thanks and keep up the great blog. Im going to start again”.

You have put a lot of hard work into this site and you should be proud of it. Look forward to reading more and hopefully one day visiting this lovely island.

    Deb :-)

  4. Thanks Debbie! I got my ideas from Yaro and from watching what others do. Feel free to copy some of my ideas as well.

Like Corsica, New Zealand has breath taking scenery, beaches, good wines and free grazing sheep, but it’s much bigger. You should have lots to write about.

    Cheers!

  5. I would truly enjoy the food, but I’m not sure about sleeping outside :) I like the outdoors and would enjoy hiking, but thinking about insects and snakes crawling my way in the middle of the night does not appeal to me.

Maybe it’s because I grew up in the country?

  6. Hi Debbie,

I don’t like insects or reptiles either which is why I sleep in a zipped up tent, when I’m outdoors.

Rather than include a long answer here that other readers may miss, I’ll write a post to expand on this important subject so stay tuned.

    Liz
