Secluded Beaches: Plage du Lotu and Saleccia

The beaches of Lotu and Saleccia are some of the most beautiful on the Mediterranean, and accessible only on foot, 4-wheel drive or by boat.

From Saint-Florent, the St. Tropez of Corsica, visitors can take a boat ride to Plage de Lotu (cost: 14€ for adults, 7€ for children as of this writing).

The boat leaves passengers at the beach of Lotu, which is nice for snorkeling since it has no waves. I find it just as pleasant and beautiful as Saleccia.

Once upon a time this now deserted area was cultivated. Until the start of the 20th century, shepherds would come down from the mountains with their flocks of sheep and goats to barter their cheese for olive oil and wheat. On the path to Saleccia you can still see a few shepherd’s huts.

After an easy 1 hour hike from Lotu is the beach of Saleccia. In the summer of 1943, an allied submarine landed more than twenty tons of weapons and explosives on this secluded beach. This mission proved to be critical in securing the Liberation of Corsica on October 4, 1943, eight months prior to the Normandy invasion.

Not much has changed in this area since the end of the war some 65 years ago.
