Algajola – Idyllic Seaside Village
Algajola is a tiny, secluded village conveniently located on the northern coast of Corsica and within driving distance of Calvi, Ile Rousse, Sant’Antonino and the entire Balagne region.
Algajola has everything I need for an enjoyable stay: Oceanfront, a peaceful setting and plenty of parking. All the hotels in Algajola overlook the sea and their rates are competitive outside of peak season.
There is a citadel, a church and a pleasant square with three restaurants where you can order anything from pizza to lamb and seafood dishes.
This tiny harbor is a far cry from Bonifacio’s international yacht scene. Corsica is an island of great contrasts. If you need a faster pace, Algajola is situated half-way between Calvi and Ile Rousse (about 15 minutes each by car).
Another view from my room’s balcony. The citadel can be seen on the right. Nice way to start the day.
Algajola has only one street so you don’t need a guidebook or a tourist office to explore it.
This small castle (Castellu) dates back from the XIII century.
I’m not sure if this is a private home or part of the castle but I’d love to lock myself in here for a week or even longer.
Practical Info
Algajola is a great location for flashpackers, families with children, couples and even single travelers.
Off season, (Spring and Fall) room rates start at 67€. Breakfast buffet is only 4€ per person. (In most places breakfast usually costs from 6.50€ to 10€ pp). Algajola is accessible by bus and by train.
There’s also a very nice campsite: Camping de la Plage. For more information see my list of Corsica Campsites (third one from the top).
