The Tower of Micalona

One thing that has always captivated me about Corsica are the impressive Genoese towers that adorn the island’s coastline. Starting in the sixteenth century, more than 100 of these towers were built by the Genoese and about 60 of them still remain to this day, although some of them are in ruins.

Except for the tower of Porto that houses a small exhibit and the one in Campomoro, the interior of these structures is off limits to visitors.

Thankfully, the tower of Micalona, (90 minutes south of Ajaccio, near the town of Porto Pollo), has been converted to a fabulous inn where guests can enjoy panoramic views of the Corsican mountains, the gulf of Valinco and the Taravo river.

The tower’s magnificent interior is a testimony to the dedication of its owner, who turned this national treasure into a lucrative venture using only the bare essentials: rocks, sand, lime and plenty of hard work.

The outer walls are two meters wide and the interior of the tower is distributed on four levels with two bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom with a shower (dug into the rock) and a small fireplace. The wood used in the gates dates from centuries ago. The few pieces of furniture are in tune with the authentic and rustic style of the tower.

Nestled within three acres of land, guests at Micalona can enjoy the cozy tower and its infinity pool in complete privacy.
