Exploring the Heart of Corsica – Part 2

Previous topic

Another recommended hike near Corte starts at a spot called parking de Frasseta (located off of D623 on the right side of the road if you are driving away from Corte) before the Chez Cesar restaurant. (View Diagram)

From here a shaded foot path steadily ascends towards a summit called Plateau d’Alzo. This trail provides magnificent views of the Restonica valley with the “Capu a Chiostru” ridge in the background.

There’s a water source on the right hand side of the trail before reaching the plateau. It’s a good idea to stop and enjoy the fresh cool water as the next portion of the trail (about 30 minutes long) becomes very rocky with no shade.

Plateau d’Alzo
The Plateau d’Alzo (1586m) joins the Restonica and the Tavignano valleys and it is the site of three working bergeries. Corsican shepherds bring their flocks to this place every year to shelter them from the Summer heat.

This site offers panoramic views of Corsica’s countryside, carpeted with green pastures and vast open spaces. The photo on the blog header above shows the scene from this summit, with the tallest peaks in Corsica including the “Paglia Orba” on the left and “Monte Cinto” in the center.

There are several giant rock formations in this location with ledges so large they can provide cover from the sun and rain. I sure hope to return to this peaceful setting and stay a little longer next time.

Practical Information
Hiking time from the parking on D623 to Alzo is about 3 hours.

If you decide to continue on to the Tavignano valley and then hike to Corte, it is best to get a ride to the Restonica valley and not have to worry about leaving your car behind.
