Why Hikers Love Corsica

Because of its high elevations and spectacular scenery, Corsica attracts a large number of hikers and rock climbers every year.

1. An Amazing Outdoor Destination
Corsica offers a variety of landscapes and elevations to suit all fitness levels. Hiking trails traverse the island from north to south, east to west and along the coastline. About one third of Corsica is a natural park.

2. Abundant Fresh Water
Corsica is one of the greenest islands in the Mediterranean, a chain of mountains bursting with natural spring water. This water is great tasting and can generally be consumed without filtering or disinfecting.

One of the heaviest and most essential items in a hiker’s backpack is water and not having to carry large amounts of it makes hiking a lot easier and enjoyable. When hiking in Corsica, as long as you know the location of every natural spring along a trail, you only need to carry enough water to sustain you from one source to the next.

Note: It is important to review information on any trail you plan to tackle before embarking on a long distance hike or join an experienced hiker who is familiar with the terrain.

3. No Poisonous Snakes
There are snakes in Corsica, though I haven’t seen any yet, but they’re all non-poisonous.

4. Few or No Mosquitoes
Perhaps it’s the ever present aromatic scrub (maquis) that keeps them away but even in the month of August (the hottest and most humid time of the year) there are no mosquitoes in the mountains. There are however small bees, mostly near the coastal areas, that can be annoying, particularly if you eat outdoors but they don’t sting.

5. Challenging Workouts
Many portions of the trails in Corsica are covered with rocks and the changes in elevation can be abrupt and steep. (French military pilots can sometimes be seen flying their Mirages through the mountains of Corsica as part of their training so it must be fun & challenging for them as well).

When climbing over these “stone ladders” it may be necessary sometimes to push yourself up with your arms or with the help of a fellow hiker. For mountain climbing in Corsica, hiking boots are highly recommended.
