Framing

An easy to use technique that can boost a photo is framing a shot, using natural or man made structures like tree branches, archways and columns.

The frame made by trees in this shot creates the sense of an onlooker discovering a paradise.

A simple tree branch can be used to break the monotony in a dull cloudless blue sky or a calm ocean as in this photo. The tree branch adds contrast and a sense of depth to an otherwise dull picture. Framing can also be used in an gray overcast sky to create balance.

Fill the Frame

One of the biggest mistakes people often make is not moving in close enough to their subjects. Try to leave no wasted space around your subject. Either get close, zoom in or crop the edges to bring the focal point closer to the viewer and fill the frame with the subject.
