Guardians of Human Memory

This post contains a free download of a slide show featuring several of Corsica’s main attractions and a sample of Corsica’s polyphonic music, a mesmerizing sound described by English writer Dorothy Carrington as “…a song from the depths of the earth, from the dawn of time”.

The song that accompanies this slide show, titled “Sintineddi”, (Sentinels in English), is interpreted by the musical group “Canta u Populu Corsu”. (The song is in Corsican and the slides are labeled in French).

This moving song is a tribute to the mysterious prehistoric figures of Filitosa, aptly called “Petrified guardians of the human memory” by the songwriter.

The prehistoric site of Filitosa was discovered in a farm in 1948 and open to the public in 1954. Filitosa is located near the port town of Propriano in the south of the island. The menhirs that appear in the slide show date back to the Neolithic.

Enjoy!

To view the slide show, you need to have Microsoft PowerPoint installed on your PC. To download this slide show of Corsica, click on the photo and save the zipped file (6.4MB) to your computer. Unzip the file and click on it (corsica.slide.show.ppt) to view the slide show.

The photos and the slide show are the work of C. Duval.
